Overview

Rendering & Solid Plastering done properly

Rendering can change how a house looks from the street more than almost any other exterior improvement. Done well, a rendered facade looks deliberate and holds up for decades. Done poorly, it drums, cracks along the joints and traps moisture behind it.

We handle cement rendering, solid plastering and render repairs across Bendigo — full facades on brick and block, patch repairs on older solid-plaster walls, and texture or acrylic topcoats over a properly prepared base.

Every job starts with the substrate. Brick, blockwork, hebel, old render and painted surfaces all need a different bonding approach, and that decision is what determines whether the finish lasts.

Inclusions

What our rendering & solid plastering work includes

Cement rendering

Sand and cement render to brick, block and hebel, floated to a smooth or sponge finish ready for coating.

Exterior rendering

Full facades, feature walls, fences and retaining walls rendered and finished to suit the house.

Render repairs

Cracked, drummy or blown render cut out, re-keyed and re-rendered so the patch blends into the surrounding wall.

Solid plastering

Traditional solid plaster work and repairs to original hard-plaster walls in older Bendigo homes.

Texture and acrylic finishes

Roll-on, trowel-on and sand-texture coatings applied over a cured, prepared base coat.

Preparation and sealing

Cleaning, bonding agents, bead and mesh where needed, then sealing before the topcoat goes on.

Typical jobs

Problems and situations we help with

  • Render cracking above windows and along wall junctions
  • Sections of render sounding hollow or drummy when tapped
  • Patches of render blown off around the base of a wall
  • Tired painted brick that would be better rendered
  • A rendered fence or retaining wall breaking down
  • Old solid plaster damaged by rising damp or impact
  • Mismatched patches from a previous repair

Local relevance in Bendigo

Bendigo has a lot of solid brick and rendered housing stock, and much of it predates modern control joints and bonding products. On those walls the original render is often lime-based and far softer than a modern cement mix, so patching with the wrong material is what causes the next round of cracking.

Seasonal movement, weather exposure and changes in moisture can all contribute to cracking and movement in rendered surfaces. The right repair approach depends on the substrate, existing render system and the cause of the damage.

Hot, dry summers matter too. Render cured too quickly in direct summer sun loses strength, so we plan the timing of exterior work around the weather and keep the work shaded and damp-cured where required.

Questions

Rendering & Solid Plastering in Bendigo — common questions

How much does rendering cost in Bendigo?

It depends on the substrate, wall area, access and the finish you choose. Patch repairs are priced per area, while full facades are quoted as a whole. We provide a written quote after looking at the walls, and quotes are free.

Can you render over painted brick?

Often yes, but only after testing the coating's adhesion. Painted surfaces need a bonding treatment, and where the paint is flaking it has to come off first. We'll tell you honestly at quote stage whether rendering or repainting is the better option.

What is the difference between cement rendering and solid plastering?

Cement rendering is a sand-and-cement coat applied mainly to exterior masonry. Solid plastering is the traditional hard-plaster trade, used internally and on older walls. Both are trowel-applied wet trades, and we do both.

Why is my render cracking or sounding hollow?

Hollow, drummy render has lost its bond with the wall, usually through moisture, movement or poor original preparation. Cracks at window and door heads are typically movement. In both cases the failed section is cut back to sound material before re-rendering.

How long does render take to cure before painting?

As a general rule cement render needs several weeks to cure before painting, and longer in cold weather. We confirm the timing for your job and can schedule the painting so the coating goes on at the right time.

Do you render fences, retaining walls and commercial buildings?

Yes. We render blockwork fences, retaining walls, garages and small commercial and business premises as well as houses, across Bendigo and the surrounding towns.
